HRC Community Outreach

University of Wisconsin - Madison Astronomy Department
HEC welcomed the UW Astronomy department to our facility for a Universe in the Pasture event. There was a presentation about the night sky, visible constellations and explanations about their meaning and shape. Over 100 attendees joined us for the event and despite the cloudy skies, we enjoyed tasty treats, face-painting, door prizes and a parade of constellations, courtesy of our horses!

FFA
In preparation for a major judging competition, approximately 100 FFA students from more than 20 surrounding communities practiced their judging skills using Hoofer horses and riders.

4-H
Hoofer Equestrian Center was host to 80 Osaukee County 4-H participants who came for a tour of the facility and view a riding demonstration.

Belleville High School
A Belleville High School class in Animal Science came for a tour and a mini-lecture on equine care and feeding.

UW Animal Science Department
In conjunction with the UW Dept of Animal Science, UW vet students and Lake County (IL) Extension we hosted a bi-state workshop entitled Equine Health Check-up. Using Hoofer horses in several different “stations,” over 40 participants had the opportunity to practice hands-on equine horse health care that included such things as heartbeats, pulse points, respiration, emergency assessments, wrapping and IM injections.

Brownies
A local Brownie Troop earned their horse badges with the help of the Hoofer Riding Club and of course, the very special Hoofer horses.

Madison Neighborhood Center
Neighborhood kids from the south side of Madison spent an afternoon touring the stable and learning all about horse care. Then, after learning how to groom and tack up, each had the opportunity to actually ride!

Dreams to Reality, Elaine Kramer
The HRC welcomed guest speaker Elaine Kramer. Elaine is the first and only Wisconsin woman inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame and known for her accomplishments as a Roman Rider in the 1950’s. The lecture, film and social were free to all.
